In a significant victory for environmental and public health, the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection has published new guidelines for businesses in relation to limiting PFAS chemical contamination in Israel\u2019s water sources \u2013 a move prompted by legal action led by Adam Teva V\u2019Din \u2013 Israel Union for Environmental Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication follows a High Court of Justice petition filed by Adam Teva V\u2019Din in late 2022, which demanded the government take immediate regulatory action to halt PFAS pollution, in line with Israel\u2019s obligations under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The petition cited years of inaction by the Ministry and urged a national response to the widespread contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a hearing, the Supreme Court ordered the Ministry to begin drafting licensing conditions and to report regularly on its progress. Today\u2019s publication of the conditions business must conform to marks a major breakthrough after sustained legal pressure and public advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A February 2024 report by the Israel Water Authority revealed widespread PFAS contamination in water sources across the country, including in drinking water wells \u2013 some of which remain active despite the pollution. PFAS, often referred to as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d are linked to increased risks of cancer, immune system disruption, and developmental harm to fetuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
