An isolated and extreme weather event has subjected the town of Zichron Yaakov to over 7 inches of rainfall over a four-hour period, setting a new record for rainfall in Israel. The Israel Meteorological Service confirms that the 196 millimeters (7.7 inches) of rainfall were recorded over a four-hour period, equivalent to 60 per cent of annual rainfall in the area.
Stark reminder of the need to prepare for extreme weather events
Attorney Tammy Gannot, Deputy Director of Adam Teva V’Din notes that the Zichron rainfall is not an isolated incident but a stark reminder of the climate crisis’s growing impact on our region.
“These events will happen more and more frequently, and we can and must prepare for them. Unfortunately, the government is has seen fit to empty the pending Climate Bill of provisions intended to assist local authorities to prepare for floods, heat waves and other extreme impacts of climate change.”
