Landmark step toward eliminating PFAS pollution in Israel: Adam Teva V’Din pushes State into action

Following the legal actions of Adam Teva V'Din, the Ministry of Environmental Protection publishes draft regulations following Supreme Court petition.

In a significant victory for environmental and public health, the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection has published new draft regulations to combat PFAS chemical contamination in Israel’s water sources – a move prompted by legal action led by Adam Teva V’Din – Israel Union for Environmental Defense.

The publication follows a High Court of Justice petition filed by Adam Teva V’Din in late 2022, which demanded the government take immediate regulatory action to halt PFAS pollution, in line with Israel’s obligations under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The petition cited years of inaction by the Ministry and urged a national response to the widespread contamination.

Following a hearing, the Supreme Court ordered the Ministry to begin regulatory procedures and to report regularly on its progress. Today’s publication marks a major breakthrough after sustained legal pressure and public advocacy.

A February 2024 report by the Israel Water Authority revealed widespread PFAS contamination in water sources across the country, including in drinking water wells – some of which remain active despite the pollution. PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are linked to increased risks of cancer, immune system disruption, and developmental harm to fetuses.

Attorney Merav Abadi, Director of the Regulatory Division at Adam Teva V’Din, and Attorney Bar Rozov, Director of the Legal Department, stated: “This is a crucial step toward phasing out the use of toxic PFAS chemicals and halting the dangerous pollution affecting us all. We will continue working to ensure the draft regulations are finalized, enforced, and accompanied by efforts to remediate and purify contaminated water sources.”

Adam Teva V’Din remains committed to protecting Israel’s environment and public health through legal action, regulatory reform, and environmental justice.
