Air pollution in south Tel Aviv – a persistent risk to health
Our High Court of Justice petition, heard in October 2022, caused the Tel Aviv Central Bus Station area to be designated as a Severe Air Pollution Zone, in line with the Clean Air Law, 2011. The Central Bus Station area is a source of severe air pollution that endangers South Tel Aviv residents in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, as well as the tens of thousands of commuters (many of them soldiers travelling from home to base, etc.) who use the station on a daily basis. The designation is a crucial step towards holding local and national authorities accountable for public health risks.
Delayed implementation
Following our lawsuit, Tel Aviv City Council drew up an Air Pollution Reduction action plan in line with the court’s decree, and submitted it in May 2024 to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
Bar Rozov, Adam Teva V’Din’s attorney in the case, reports Minister Idit Silman has delayed formally approving the Tel Aviv plan for seven months – further postponing measures to relieve the public of exposure to toxic pollutants implementation.
“As Israel’s environmental watchdog, Adam Teva V’Din is prepared to return to court to ensure that the decree is enforced.”
